Wi-Fi is a wireless networking technology that allows devices such as computers (laptops and desktops), mobile devices (smart phones and wearables), and other equipment (printers and video cameras) to interface with the Internet. Internet connectivity occurs through a wireless router.
WiFi is a short name for Wireless Fidelity. To connect to a Wi-Fi LAN, a computer must be equipped with a wireless network interface controller.
Vic Hayes has been called the "father of Wi-Fi" because he chaired the IEEE committee that created the 802.11 standards in 1997. Before the public even heard of WiFi, Hayes established the standards that would make WiFi feasible. The 802.11 standard was established in 1997.
Wi-Fi technology today is found all over the world, and the means for making it fast and reliable was an Australian invention. It is the same wireless network technology that allows our phones, computers and other technologies to connect to the internet reliably and at fast speeds
Wireless connectivity, often known as Wi-Fi, is the technology that allows a PC, laptop, mobile phone, or tablet device to connect at high speed to the internet without the need for a physical wired connection.
It is a technology that uses radio waves to provide network connectivity. A connection is established using a wireless adapter to create hotspots — areas in the vicinity of a wireless router that are connected to the network and allow users to access internet services.
Wireless LAN, It is one of the important technologies of the computer networking, It allows the users to connect to the internet technology without the wires, It allows the router to be cordless also, The network is connected through an access point for internet and it is connected to a USB Port.
A wifi network transmits information across a network. It needs a wireless adapter that converts data into radio signals. The signals are then transmitted through antenna to the router that decodes the signals. As the signal is decoded by the router, it is sent to the Internet via a wired Ethernet connection.
WiFi works off of the same principal as other wireless devices - it uses radio frequencies to send signals between devices. And to receive the information found in these waves, your radio receiver needs to be set to receive waves of a certain frequency. For WiFi this frequency happens to be 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz .
I Internet is the data (the language). Wi-Fi is a wireless network technology that sends this data via internet connections (the highway) through the air to wide area networks and on to non-wired computers.
Drawbacks or disadvantages of WiFi
Data transfer rate decreases (to individual computer) when number of clients or computers connected with wifi network increases. ➨Full security is difficult to achieve due to wifi connection being wireless in nature.
Excessive WiFi exposure is known to be associated with disrupted learning and memory, sleep deprivation, and fatigue related to reduced melatonin secretion and increased norepinephrine secretion at night. However, the use of any screen time is also associated with these changes.
- PROS: Typically faster than cellular internet. Signal stability.
- CONS: Not as easily accessed as cellular. For “public” hotspots, extreme security risks.
- PROS: Mobility – ability to move the connection with the device being used.
- CONS: In many areas, major speed variances based on the tower being used.
