BRISK WALKING FOR GOOD HEALTH

According  to  a  new  research   ,regular  brisk  walking   is  a   more  effective   method   for  weight  loss  than   going  to  the  Gym.  A study by the London School of Economics found that those who engaged in “regular, brisk walking” for longer than half an hour had lower Body Mass Indexes (BMI) and smaller waists than those who did other exercise such as going the gym or playing football or rugby. The results were particularly true for women, people over 50 and those on low incomes. Dr Grace Lordan, who led the research said: “The results thus provide an argument for a campaign to promote walking… Given the obesity epidemic and the fact that a large proportion of people are inactive, recommending that people walk briskly more often is a cheap and easy policy option.” Mike Loosemore a Lead Consultant Sports Physician for The Institute of Sport, Exercise and Health said: “This really posi

AN EYE DROP TO DISSOLVE CATARACTS

Researchers in the US have developed a new drug that can be delivered directly into the eye via an eye dropper to shrink down and dissolve cataracts - the leading cause of blindness in humans.  While the effects have yet to be tested on humans, the team from the University of California, San Diego hopes to replicate the findings in clinical trials and offer an alternative to the only treatment that’s currently available to cataract patients - painful and often prohibitively expensive surgery.  Affecting tens of millions of people worldwide, cataracts cause the lens of the eye to become progressively cloudy, and when left untreated, can lead to total blindness. This occurs when the structure of the crystalline proteins that make up the lens in our eyes deteriorates, causing the damaged or disorganized proteins to clump and form a milky blue or brown layer. While cataracts cannot spread from one eye to the other, they can occur independently in   both   eyes. The

NEW TISSUE VELCRO COULD HELP REPAIR DAMAGE HEART CELLS

In   a new   medical   breakthrough ,  Engineers at the University of Toronto just made assembling functional heart tissue as easy as fastening your shoes. The team has created a bio compatible scaffold that allows sheets of beating heart cells to snap together just like Velcro™.  One of the main advantages is the ease of use,” says Professor Milica Radisic (ChemE, IBBME), who led the project. “We can build larger tissue structures immediately before they are needed, and disassemble them just as easily. I don’t know of any other technique that gives this ability.” Growing heart muscle cells in the lab is nothing new. The problem is that too often, these cells don’t resemble those found in the body. Real heart cells grow in an environment replete with protein scaffolds and support cells that help shape them into long, lean beating machines. In contrast, lab-grown cells often lack these supports, and tend to be amorphous and weak. Radisic and her team focus on engineer

ELECTRIC EELS

The most important fact to know about an electric eel is that it is not an eel. Although it has an elongated body like an eel, the electric eel (Electrophorus electricus) is actually a type of knifefish.   The electric eel was first described by Linnaeus in 1766 and since then, has been reclassified several times. At present, the electric eel is the only species in its genus. It is only found in muddy, shallow waters surrounding the Amazon and Orinoco rivers in South America.   Electric eels have cylindrical bodies, up to 2 meters (about 8 feet) in length. An adult may weigh 20 kilograms (44 pounds), with males being much smaller than females. They come in a range of colors, including purple, gray, blue, black, or white. The fish lack scales and have poor While the fish live in water and possess gills, they breathe air. An electric eel needs to rise to the surface and inhale about once every ten minutes. Electric eels are solitary creatures. When they m

CLONING MAMMOTH

Scientists   have  claimed   that  within  five  years  the extinct  woolly  mammoth  could  be  brought    back  to  life    from  the  bone  marrow of  the  species.A  team  from Russia's    Sakha's  Republic 's mammoth  museum   and Kinky  University  in Japan  says   that the  recent discovery  well  preserved   marrow  inside  the  thigh   bone  of   a woolly  mammoth  in Siberia    has  raised the  hope  that  the species  could   be cloned .By  replacing  the nuclei  of  egg   cells from  an  elephant  with  those   taken   from  the  mammoth's  marrow cells  , embryos  with  mammoth  DNA.can  be  produced. This   embryo  then  be  plant  into  elephant    wombs   for   delivery  as  the  two  species are  close  relatives.Securing  nuclei   with  an undamaged  gene  is essential  for   the  nucleus   transplantation  technique. Mammoth  became  extinct about  10,000  years  ago.

WEB BASICS -SEARCH TERMS

When you decide to keep a Web page to look at later, you're doing something called "bookmarking". Bookmarks are simply links to sites that you visit frequently or want to keep handy for reference. EATING NUTS MAKES YOU LIVE LONGER

Nuts are a delicious part of an anti-aging diet, helping you ward off chronic diseases like cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and certain cancers—and thanks to a review of two large-scale, long-term studies published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2013, there's strong evidence that nuts of all kinds can help you live longer, too. In that research, eating just an ounce of nuts daily was linked to a 20 percent lower risk of death over a 30-year period. Nuts and General Health   Nuts have been a regular component of the human diet for thousands of years. A growing body of evidence that nuts are healthy prompted the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2003 to issue a qualified health claim saying that current scientific data suggest that eating 1.5 oz (42g) of nuts each day may reduce the risk of heart disease. More recent research has shown that eating nuts is linked to a lower risk of colon cancer, gallbladder disease, and diverticulit

GLOBAL POSITIONING SYSTEM (GPS)

The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a technical marvel made possible by a group of satellites in Earth's orbit that transmit precise signals, allowing GPS receivers to calculate and display accurate location, speed and time information to the user. By capturing the signals from three or more satellites (among a constellation of 31 satellites available), GPS receivers are able to triangulate data and pinpoint your location. With the addition of computing power and data stored in memory such as road maps, points of interest, topographic information and much more, GPS receivers are able to convert location, speed and time information into a useful display format. GPS was originally created by the United States Department of Defense (DOD) as a military application. The system has been active since the early 1980s but began to become useful to civilians in the late 1990s. Consumer GPS has since become a multi-billion dollar industry with a wide
