CORAL REEF

sites.google.com/site/pandeabhishekxA Coral     abhishek-pande66.blogspot.com.  reef    is  a  colony    of  millions  of   tiny    animals   called  polyps. They  produces   a  hard  , limestone   skeleton, on   which  the  next  generation    of polyps  grow.Corals   also  contain   a  algae,  which  is  essential   for  their  survival.
A  coral  looks  like   an   jellyfish ,  with  a  tubular  body  and   tentacles   around   its  mouth.
Reef  building  corals   use   their  tentacles  to   catch plankton  from  the  water.
Types  of  Corals-The  main  types  of  corals  are-hard  stony   corals  that  build  reefs,  and  soft  corals  that  don't  built   reefs  ,some  of  them  are- Brain  corals  It  is  a  hard   coral , its wrinkled   edges   make  it  look    like  a  giant  brain.
Stag horn  coral -This  is  a  antler  like  coral  ,it  grows  very  fast   on  the  reef.
Dead  man's  fingers-    Its  tentacles   looks   like  decomposing  fingers.
Fan  corals-  Its  polyps   link  together  to  form a  large  lacy  skeleton.
  • Coral Reefs-  The  Coral  reef   covers  less  than   1  per cent of  the  Earth's  surface. But  they  are    the  homes  of   twenty five  percent  of  all  marine   fish  species.Reefs  are  useful   in  many  ways   to  human.-Chemical   compounds   found   in  reefs   are  used  to  make    several  important  medicines.
  • Coral  reefs   form   natural  barrier   that protect  nearby   shorelines  from  strong  waves  or  currents.
  • Coral   polyps     turn  the  carbon dioxide   in  water  into  limestone. With out Corals  the  amount  of  carbon-Di-oxide    in  the  water  would  rise,  destroying  precious    habitats.
There  are  many types  of  reefs .Some  are-
Barrier  Reef-It  is  found  off shore.Barrier  reefs  are  separated  from   land    by   deep  lagoon.
Atoll   reef- A   ring  of  coral  that  grows  on  top   of   a sunken  volcano  forming  a  lagoon  is  called  an  atoll.
Platform  reef-When   coral  reaches   the  surface of  the  sea  and  branches  out, growing  horizontally,  a  plat form reef  is  formed.

GREAT REEFS  OF  WORLD-
The  Great  Barrier   Reef(Australia)-It  is  the  longest  reef   in  the world,  more  than  2,010 km (1250 miles) long.It   consists  of 3,000   reefs.  It is  the   largest  living  structure  on  the  Earth. It  is  the home  to 1,500 species of   fish,175  species  of  birds  and  500  species  of  corals.
Kwajalein ,Marshall   Islands-   It is the world's largest   atoll  surrounds  a  lagoon  97 km  long.
Many   corals    on    the  Great   barrier  Reef    produce  eggs  once  a  year. All   eggs  are  produce  at  the  same  time,  after  the  full  moon  in  October  or  November.  This  is  a  spectacular   view  under water as  the sea  is filled  with  eggs.

But ,   Coral  Reefs    are  under  threat    now. Some  threats  are-
Global    warming-The   rise  in  temperature  , adversely  affect   the  corals  as   algae   in  corals  dies  due  to  rise  in  temperature .This  kills  the coral  which  depends  on  it.
Pollution- Reefs   are  damaged  by  the  pollution  from  sewage,  mining,  pesticides  and oil  spills.
Over fishing- The  overfishing  of  sea  urchins , which  predates on coral  eating  starfish  -  leaves  corals  vulnerable.
Aquarium   trade-  Some   fisherman   ,use  cyanide  poison   to  stun  fish  ,  then  use  crow bars  to  rip apart  the  coral  to    get  at  the  fish.
