NATURAL RESOURCES are derived from the environment and are essential for our survival .These include crude oil, coal, natural gas, which gives energy. The resources are found in the Earth's crust like metal ores, salt, lime, quartz sand, precious stones.Besides drinking water, soil, forests are also natural resources. All these resources are needed for our day to day life, and our very existence .
Some of the most important resources are -ORES.
ORES-METALS occur in the form of ORES.They are mixed with rocks They are extracted from the ore by the process of Smelting .Metal is melted out of the rocks.Iron is extracted from iron ore .Smelting is done in huge furnaces . in steel plants..Metals are used mainly in the form of alloys , which is a mixture of two metals.like ,Iron is changed into steel by adding Carbon The amount of carbon determines , the hardness of steel ,whether it is soft, and can be molded or hard to make steel blades.
PORCELAIN -Porcelain is made of three raw materials, china clay, feldspar, and quartz. They are mixed in a proper ratio to make porcelain mass, which is then poured in moulds or processed to make vessels .The objects are then heated at 900centigrade .for almost 20 hours.Porcelain get the shine glaze from alumina, silica, or Cacilia slurry and is heated again at 1300 centigrade. This make porcelain very hard durable.
SALT- Salt is also a natural resource. It can be obtained from the sea or from underground salt deposits. From the sea ,it is extracted by evaporation of the sea water .sSea water is evaporated in flat basins to get salt. The evaporation is done by the heat of the Sun..Another type of salt is hard rock salt ,stored deep inside the surface of the earth. The extraction is done by washing out from rocks, for washing out ,the the deposit is drilled several times and water is pumped in at some places. This water gets enriched with the salt ,present in rocks and forms a salty solution called brine. The brine is pumped out to the surface where water gets evaporated, and pure salt remains behind.
GLASS IS ALSO MADE BY NATURAL RESOURCES.
Glass is consist of lime, soda, and quartz..These three components are mixed together finely and melted at about 1600,centigrade in a furnace. Then molten glass cool to 1000,centigrade ,it is shaped into different objects.Depending on the intended use , the glass objects are shaped by pressing or drawing the molten glass.
THE MOST EXPENSIVE NATURAL RESOURCE -DIAMOND-Diamond are very expensive ,because they occur at few places ,in the world-Russia and South Africa.
Diamonds are made of carbon and are very hardest substance known. It is because of high pressure at their place of origin deep below the earth's surfaceThey are naturally thrown up on the Earth's surface through volcanic eruptions.
That is why they are mined in the vent of extinct volcanoes.
They are very hard ,thus used in grinding tools .The common use is in jewelery .diamond rings, necklaces, ear rings etc are made ,which are highly expensive. But before given shape as jewelery ,it has to be cut in angles. to give them a shine.Diamonds can be made artificially also,by creating conditions as found under the surface of the Earth.
Artificial diamonds are not as valuable as the natural ones.
