TULSI -THE INDIAN BASIL

Tulsi, also known as the Indian basil or the holy basil, is often referred to in India as the Queen of Herbs. Considered a holy herb. In  English   it is called  holy basil, (Ocimum tenuiflorum), also called tulsi or tulasi, flowering plant of the mint family (Lamiaceae) grown for its aromatic leaves.

The Tulsi is the most sacred plant that we worship because of its connection to Lord Vishnu. Also known as the Tulasi, the plant is believed to be the earthly form of the goddess Tulsi who was a devoted worshipper of Lord Krishna.  In ancient scriptures, the Tulsi is regarded as a gateway between heaven and earth.

 

 

Which type of Tulsi is best for home?

You can keep either of these two varieties of Tulsi plant at home. Both Rama and Shyama Tulsi plant are widely popular for their medicinal benefits. The Holy Basil or green Tulsi plant is the commonly available Tulsi plants considered auspicious as per Vastu Shastra.

 

 Tulsi has also been shown to counter metabolic stress through normalization of blood glucose, blood pressure and lipid levels, and psychological stress through positive effects on memory and cognitive function and through its anxiolytic and anti-depressant properties.

 Tulsi leaves or holy basil is known to be an effective treatment for high blood pressure. According to the journal Studies of Ethno-Medicine, combination of neem and tulsi was beneficial to lower the blood pressure levels due to their active compounds.

Tulsi offers a one-shot remedy for enhancing the healthy functioning of the kidneys by aiding in the excretion of excess uric acid and maintaining the uric acid level in the kidneys, thereby preventing or treating gout.

 Tulsi supports respiratory health, so it's especially helpful for fighting off colds, flus, and allergies. Because it helps clear out the lungs, tulsi is also great for eliminating bad breath. It supports the colon for healthy elimination, and is one of the top herbs for headaches and fevers.

It is originally from India and is used in Ayurvedic medicine as an “adaptogen” to counter life's stresses. It is considered a sacred plant by the Hindus and is often planted around Hindu shrines. The Hindu name for holy basil, Tulsi, means "the incomparable one." Medicine is made from the leaves, stems, and seeds.
