Diamond is a solid form of pure carbon with its atoms arranged in a crystal. Solid carbon comes in different forms known as allotropes depending on the type of chemical bond. The two most common allotropes of pure carbon are diamond and graphite.

 Diamond, a mineral composed of pure carbon. It is the hardest naturally occurring substance known; it is also the most popular gemstone. Because of their extreme hardness, diamonds have a number of important industrial applications.

Diamonds and Carbon. Diamonds are made of carbon atoms, bonded in such a way as to create crystal formations. In high-temperature, high-pressure environments, such as is present in the earth's mantle, carbon atoms bond in a particular formation of five atoms.

Di amonds, sapphires, rubies, and emeralds are considered precious and all other gemstones are semi-precious.

In  diamonds, rarity equals value. With diamonds in the normal range, value is based on the absence of color, because colorless diamonds are the rarest. With fancy color diamonds—the ones outside the normal color range—the rarest and most valuable colors are saturated pinks, blues, and greens.

 A blue diamond represents truth, devotion, eternity and spirituality.

What Diamond is the best?
For diamonds over 2 carats, a clarity grade of VS2 or higher is the safest bet for avoiding any signs of visible inclusions. In diamonds between 1 and 2 carats, clarity grades of SI1 or better will not have inclusions easily visible to the naked eye.

Even though the Archduke was the first to propose with a diamond ring, he was by no means a trendsetter. In fact, diamond engagement rings didn't become popular until 1947 when De Beers, the British company that mined diamonds in South Africa, launched an advertising campaign.
 
 Diamonds are present in about 35 countries. South Africa, Russia and Botswana are the main producers of gem diamond while Australia produces most of the industrial diamond. They are also found in India, Russia, Siberia, Brazil, China, Canada and the United States.

Beau Sancy diamond
One of the world's oldest and most famous diamonds has been sold for almost $10 million in Geneva. The 35 carat Beau Sancy diamond is at least 400 years old, and until now has been owned only by members of Europe's royal families.

 Diamond History

The earliest diamonds were found in India in 4th century BC, although the youngest of these deposits were formed 900 million years ago. A majority of these early stones were transported along the network of trade routes that connected India and China, commonly known as the Silk Road.
