WORLD FAMOUS WRITERS -ARTHUR CONAN DOYLE

Sir Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle KStJ DL (22 May 1859 – 7 July 1930) was a British writer and medical doctor. He created the character Sherlock Holmes in 1887 when he published A Study in Scarlet, the first of four novels and more than fifty short stories about Holmes and Dr. Watson., Scottish writer best known for his creation of the detective Sherlock Holmes—one of the most vivid and enduring characters in English fiction.



At med school, Doyle met his mentor, Professor Dr. Joseph Bell, whose keen powers of observation would later inspire Doyle to create his famed fictional detective character, Sherlock Holmes. ... During Doyle's third year of medical school, he took a ship surgeon's post on a whaling ship sailing for the Arctic Circle.

Sherlock Holmes is a brilliant but antisocial detective. He doesn't seem to show emotion or care about other people's feelings — even those of his trusted sidekick Dr. Watson.

The unique and unconventional character of Sherlock Holmes, formed by Doyle’s memories and friendships, fascinated millions of readers with his extraordinary ability to solve any crime using the skills of observation and deduction. Sherlock was not a “machine man”, though, he was rather a complex individual suffering from depression and mania and used various drugs from time to time – a picture of instability anchored by profound rationalism.

Irene Adler is a fictional character  and girl friend of Sherlock  Holmes, in the Sherlock Holmes stories written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. She was featured in the short story "A Scandal in Bohemia", published in July 1891.

    Doyle wrote 60 mystery stories featuring the wildly popular detective character Sherlock Holmes and his loyal assistant Watson.

He additionally produced a handful of historical novels including one about the Napoleonic Era called The Great Shadow in 1892, and his most famous historical novel, Rodney Stone, in 1896.


In a story titled "The Adventure of the Final Problem," published 1893, Holmes dies after falling off a cliff while battling his arch-nemesis, the evil Professor Moriarty.


Doyle died of a heart attack in Crowborough, England on July 7, 1930.
