Belgium also referred to as the Kingdom
of Belgium is located in Europe. . The city’s capital is located in Brussels and just
like most of its cities, it is characterized by a scenic beauty and
picturesque canals. It is not surprising to hear people describe places
in Belgium as fairy tales. Here are some of the things Belgium is known
for.
Brussels Airport records the highest sales of chocolate in the world. More than 700 tonnes of chocolate are sold yearly at this International airport. In a year, an average Belgian consumes about 8000g of chocolate. There’s a lot of debate about which country produces the best chocolates, and Belgium is a top contender.
Can be found everywhere (every street corner and every cafe) and are sold in a cone, small or big. But the chips are not made (anymore) from freshly peeled potatoes, but bought from the freezer section from the supermarket.
The price is on average around 3 euro plus the ketchup or mayo, so that is an extra 50 cents to 1 euro. I would say all of it looked, smelled and tasted the same, no matter the place.
Most streets are full of very famous, big chocolate brands like Leonidas and Godiva. But these shops are in a lot of countries all over the world. While in Belgium, try something not so famous, like authentic handmade chocolate. Brands like Leonidas label themselves handmade.
Who doesn’t love waffles? Waffles come from Belgium and there are two kinds of waffles: Brussels waffle and Liege waffle. Waffles are probably one of the most famous things from Belgium.
The Brussels waffle is the rectangular shape one, which is thicker and crunchy. Because the dough is not sweet, this one can be served with fruits, cream, chocolate or ice cream on top. Or any combination of those things.
The Liege waffle is smaller, oval shape and fluffy. The dough has sugar inside, which caramelizes when it’s baked. That is already a sweet enough waffle and it’s pretty common to eat it simple. But it’s up to you how you want it and what is sweet for you. Take your pick and get creative.
541 days. That’s how long it took Belgian politicians to form an official government after the federal elections of June 13, 2010. It earned Belgium a Guinness World Record for going the longest time with no government, smashing the previous record held by Iraq which went government-free for 289 days in 2010.
You would think that a country would fall apart in the absence of a central government. Just look at how Americans start panicking when their government shuts down. But not the Belgians who managed just fine with the help of a caretaker government, a well-oiled bureaucracy, and a naughty sense of humour even as their politicians spent a year and a half bickering away.
