A new fashion for taking selfie while on pilgrimage to the holy site of ISLAM is being greeted with disapproval by some clerics.
A growing numbers of pilgrims are taking pictures of themselves while on the hajj- the main pilgrimage , Muslim seek to perform at least once in their life -and posting it on the social media for friends and family .From Tawaf-circling the holy Kaaba structure in Mecca - to prayers a top Mount Mercy in Arafat , and stoning of "devil" in Mina , the key stages have all been recorded on Cameras and smart phones for posterity and instant sharing through social media.The increasing popular phenomena has sparked controversy among more conservative Muslims. They are criticizing pilgrims ,who take selfies.
Hajj is the one of the world's largest religious gathering .It has attracted this over two million Hajjis this year. Kaaba
Favorite scene include the key steps of the pilgrimage such as ritual walk around the Kaaba in Mecca .or trying to kiss the black stone inside. The practice took off after the authorities relaxed a previous ban on camera phones inside the holy sites.
Now many religious scholars have spoken out against "Selfie fever " as "Touristy" behavior.According to Saudi cleric Assim Al-Hakeem , 'taking such selfie and videos defy the wish of our Prophet.",another cleric Abdul Razzaq Al Badr grumbles ,that for such people , the only purpose of this trip is to take pictures and not the worship .
But now a days so many people have camera phones ,so it is not easy to stop .
Some even support it on condition ,a professor of Islamic Sharia law in the Saudi capital Riyadh said "If photographs are only for personnel memory and not for disseminating , then no problem ."But if they were for the purpose of showing off, then they are prohibited,such as the photography that takes place at the (hajj ) rites"so it is better for Muslims to avoid them"he said of selfies. Still selfies has become a sort of fashion and now a way of life,one can record even small activities and recall it later for family and friends.
But , it should not harm any religious sentiments or practices , keeping in mind the place, occasion and regulations of the rites,while taking a selfie or selfies.
