MEDICAL -BREAKTHROUGH-EARS GROWN FROM RIBS.

IN  A   path breaking   surgery,British  doctors   from  London's Great  Ormond  street Hospital (GOSH),created a  new  pair  of  ears  for  a  London  boy, who  was born  without  ears ,form  his  own  ribs and  have  implanted  an  aid  allowing  him  to  hear  for  the first  time  in life.
The nine  year old  boy  Kieran  Sorkin  was  born  deaf  with  small  holes around  the  part  of   his ears.Around  100  children    a  year  in UK  are  born  without  one  or  both  ears This  condition  is   known  as   macrotia.
This boy  was   born  with  bilateral    macrotia  meant  neither  of   his  ears  had  properly  formed.
The  whole  procedure   began  with  doctors  harvesting  rib  cartilage   from  both  sides  of boy's  chest  which they  then  carefully   carved  and  shaped  into frame works  for   boy's new  ears.
Secondly ,  they  used  an outline   of   his  mom's  ears  as  a  'family  template' to  make  them  as  close  as  possible  to  the shape  that  the  boy  might otherwise   have  inherited  from  either  of  his  parents.
Thirdly  ,the  team  of  doctors   grafted  the  ear  frameworks  on  to   either  side  of  his  head,  placing  them  under  pockets  of  skin  that  were  then  sucked  down  with  a  vacuum  so  that  the  skin  conformed  to  the  contours  of  each  new  ear.
As  soon  as  the  boy  woke up  his   parents  help  him  to  take  as  'side selfie'  picture  of one  of  his  new  ears  to  see  the  results to  which  the  boy  responded  simply 'wow'.
The  whole  operation  was  carried  out  by  GOSH  plastic   and  reconstructive  surgeon  Dr  Neil Bulstrode .It  took  around   six  hours  to  complete  the  procedure .He  is  one  of   only  clinicians  world wide  to  carryout  double  ear  reconstructions.
According  to   Bulstrode , bilateral  reconstructions  are  some  times  done  one  at  a  time. But  in  this  case  ,both  of  the new ears  have  created   at  the same time. This  ensure  the  ears  are   balanced  and  achieved  the  best  results.
The  boy has   undergone     a separate  series  of  operations  to  improve  his  hearing.
This   operation   brings  a  significant  improvement   in  quality  of  life  for  children  with  microtia.
