IN MODI'S GUJRAT ,MEN AND LIONS LIVES IN HARMONY

YES  ,IT   IS  TRUE,LION  AND MEN  LIVES  IN  HARMONY  ,IN  GUJRAT.
The   Maldhari  communities   and  the  lions of  Gir  co  -exists  in  a  win-win  situation. A  large part  of  the  lions  prey  base  is  the  livestock  of  the  Maldhris  while  the  community  gains  from  the  free  excess  to   forest  resources .
A  study  by  the  wild life  Institute  of  India  reveals  that  Gir  Maldhris   do  not  view  lions  as a threat . There   had  been   no  attack   by  the big  cats  on  humans  in  the past  two  decades  within  the  area   covered in  the  study.
The  lions   had attacked   and  killed  mainly  aged  and  dying  cattle for  food.Besides the  annual  financial  loss  for  Maldhris  because of  livestock  loss  to  lions  was minimal  (Rs2038)but  the   free  grazing  rights  and  the   compensation   at  the  current  rate  were  additional  profit  for  Maldhari  families   living  inside  Gir.These  people  gets  other benefits  also -like   collection  of  fuel  wood  and  minor  forest  products, use  of   forest  top   soil  mixed  with  dung  sold  as  manure, free access  to  water, and  job  opportunities  with  the  forest  department  and  maintaining   their  social  customs.
That  is  why   lions have  been  flourishing  in  Gir.It  is  the  generosity of  Maldhris  who  do  not  grudge   the  big  cats   preying  on  their  cattle .And  that's why   they  deserve  to  be  given  credit    for  the  steady  growth in  population  of  the  Asiatic  lions.
The  name of  the   WII  study  is, 'Living  with  Lions ;The  economics of  coexistence ,'.
