ICE ON THE EARTH.

ABOUT   ONE  TENTH  OF EARTH'S  SURFACE   COVERED  IN  ICE.
This  ice  is  built  up  over  thousands  of   years , most  ice  occurs  in  thick   sheets  that cap    the  land   at  North  and  South  poles.Ice  also tops  the  peaks  of  high  mountains ,  and  rivers  of  ice  called   glaciers   gouge    deep  valleys   in  polar and  mountain  region.
GLACIERS - A   Glacier   is  a  huge  slow  moving  river  of  ice. As   glacier   moves  downhill it  can  steep  sided,  u -shape   U  shaped  valleys.
There  are  two main types  of  glaciers .Valley  glacier    and  continental   glacier.
Valley  glacier  are    streams  of   flowing  ice  that  are  confined   within  steep-walled    valleys .
Continental  glacier - resemble  huge  chunks of  ice   and  can  cover  a  large  part  of  a   continent ,  like Antarctica.
GLACIAL  FEATURES-
Melt water  cave -It     is  formed  by  melted  snow  or ice.
Crevasse- Vertical  crack   in  the ice  a  glacier  moves
Iceberg- It  is  floated  ice  that  has  broken away.
Retreating  glacier- Thinning   of  snow  or  ice on   glacier.
Ice pinnacle-   It  is  a  very  large  piece  of  ice  that juts  out  from  a  glacier.

ICE BERGS-   Icebergs   are  form  when   huge  chunk  of  ice   from  glaciers  and  icecaps      break off   and   fall  into  the  ocean.
Seven eighths    of  an  iceberg's  mass   is   below    water   .The  one  eighth  we  see  is  just  the   'top  of  the  iceberg'.
ICE   berg    flow  because the    density  of ice  is  less  than   water.
Ice bergs    comes  in  many  shapes -
Tabular-  It   has  steep  sides   with  flat top  like  a  huge  table.
Block y-  It  has   box shaped    with  steep    sides
Dome     -It    has   a rounded  and smooth  shape.
Wedge-  It's  top  is  narrow    to  a   pyramid   like   point.
Pinnacle -It  has  one   or   more   spires   rise  very  high
Dry dock-It    has  u -shaped opening   in  the   middle  due  to erosion.
SNOW   TO    ICE- Snow  falls  to  the  ground  and  compresses   into  small  round   ice  particles  called  granular  ice.As  the  ice  compacts it  contain   less  air and  forms  large   granules  known  as   firn   .  With   the  pressure  of   further  snow ,  the  firm  welds   into  solid ,   glacial ice    called ' blue ice'.
ICEBERG   HAZARD- In    1912 ,  the  luxury   passenger  liner ' Titanic  '  struck   an  iceberg   and  sank.More  than  1,500  people   lost  their  lives  in  the  disaster .
INTERESTING  FACTS-
  • Despite    its  name  , Greenland  is   mostly  covered   in  a  layer  of  ice.Averaging  1,790m(5,900ft)  thick.A  single  glacier  make  up  this  ice.
  • The   largest  piece  of   ice  on   earth  is  the   Antarctic ice sheet. It's  volume  is    30  million  cubic  km(7.2  million  cubic  mile).
  • The    depth  of  ice  cap  covering   the  south pole  is  4km  (2.5  miles).
  • When  moving  icebergs      scrap  past   each other  they  produce   a   sound  like    barking  dogs    or  screaming  monkeys- and  very  louder. Some  of  these"ice quakes" are   'ear deafening.
  • The  coldest  place  in  the  world  is   Vladivostok,  Antarctica.(-85Centegrade) .
