THE RECENT DISASTER THAT HIT THIS HIMALAYAN STATE has severely devastated the state has rendered thousands home less ,more than thousand people has loss their lives .Besides thousands of houses ,shops has gutted in this calamity.Roads,bridges, broke and cut of thousands of people from main land.
The main point of disaster ,the Kedarnath valley was almost submerge under water and heavy debris brought by the flooding river..Maximum casuality occurred here .,hundreds of dead bodies found floating here in and around the main temple shrine.
The immediate cause of this disaster was the over melting of the two Glaciers situated above the temple site.The Chaurabari and the Kampani glacier melted and shed heavy flow of water downward ,this water overfilled the Gandhi reservoir .,above the temple .The heavy rain ,which continues for three days ,further aggravates the situation .Excess water finally broke the wall of the reservoir and due to steep slope the enormous water rushes downwards destroying and washes away everything that comes in its way .houses,trees, people and in minutes everything were submerged under water and heavy debris.taking heavy toll of life and property . At other places heavy rain floods the river Alaknanda and Mandakni .These two rivers causes heavy destruction along side its banks.Houses,shops,vehicles,bridges , roads, almost everything that comes in its way.
Hundreds of people died ,houses ,shops bridges collapsed .
This disaster has destroyed the basic infrastructure of the hilly area .electricity,telecommunication all disrupted due to heavy floods and landslides.
IMMEDIATE CAUSES OF THE DISASTER.-There can be many reasons for the tragedy that devastated the state.But some are certainly man made.Now a days the 'Chardham Yatra' have become a multi crore business ,many people involves in this business-Hoteliers,tour operators,aviation companies,material suppliers ,transporters etc.According to a report more than ' one crore' people visit the holy shrines of Kedarnath and Badrinath every year or during yatra season.These people tries to brought maximum number of people ,to boost their profit.Naturally the burden of vehicles , people is immense for fragile terrain of hills..Besides ,the content of carbon - di- oxide in the atmosphere increases due to pollution by vehicles and by people(a very large amount of fuel is burned to prepare food for people).This all enhance the total temperature of the atmosphere.This cause the glaciers to melt faster .and releasing more water than usual .
A green house effect works here.
Many people now a days visit here not out of mere devotion but they have made it a sort of ' religious picnic.Every year they comes with heavy cavalcade and enjoys it like a picnic.
Another reason is-
CUTTING OF TREES.-The indiscriminate cutting of trees make the soil loose.The roots of trees binds the soil and prevent soil erosion ,by running water.But when soil lose tree cover ,it easily washed away by running water because in hills ,due to steep slope.the speed of running water is very high.Thus large chunk of soil washes away.This causes landslides and collapses of houses and buildings.
Trees also maintain temperature balance.They absorbs carbon - di- oxide and reduces the warming of the atmosphere.Thus prevents excess ice to be melt.
CONSTRUCTING BUILDINGS NEAR RIVER BANKS- Now a day buildings and houses are constructed very near to the river banks.The speed of river water is maximum in hills due to steep slope.When river overflows , the powerful water current breaks the river bank and every thing near it.The houses and buildings that collapsed were situated near river banks. Constructions should be done at least 500 meter away from river bank.
As a whole the terrain of hills are very fragile and prone to severe erosion(washing away of soil or even land), by water, as force of water is maximum due to slope.
BUILDING OF DAMS- Construction of Dams involves blasting of rocks and cutting of hills.This makes the terrain weak ,besides the construction ' debris' often blocks the course of a river and force it to change its course towards human settlements.Thus many villages comes under threat,particularly during monsoon.More over a big reservoir behind a dam can cause severe danger at the time of any casualty .
We should take proper measures to avoid such calamity in future.

- Number of people visiting at a time should be checked., to avoid excess pressure.
- Cutting of trees should be banned on hill slopes.
- Construction of buildings near river bank should not be allowed.
- Pollution of water ,air should be checked to avoid green house effect as heating of atmosphere can cause Glaciers to melt.

- RELIEF MEASURES- Government has done tremendous effort to save people .Thousands of people were rescued by air lifting them who got caught through helicopters .This was the biggest rescue operation in the world ,where thousands of people were rescued in less than a week's time.Our air force has done this great task with success .Besides ,rescue work supply of essential items ,food,clothes,water ,fuel etc were sent to people in remote affected areas.In all UTTRA KHAND Government has done tremendous task and is still doing for helping people ,suffered by the calamity
- We condole with deep sorrow ,the demise of hundreds of people who lost their lives .in this disaster.
- But we should not lose hope as nature has amazing power of reconstruction.It reconstruct very fast every thing.and soon every thing will become normal.If nature destroys , it also heals .and it heals quickly.
