Fungi    are  classified  as   separate  kingdom.This  kingdom  includes  not  only   the  familiar  mushroom   ,molds,  puffballs, and  stink horns,  but  also   yeast, smuts,rusts,  and  lichens.Most   fungi are  multi cellular,  consisting   of    a  mass    of  thread  like   hyphae  that  together  form  a     mycelium..However  ,the  simpler   fungi,e.g-yeast  are  microscopic    single cell organism.Typically   fungi   reproduce   by  means  of  spores.Most  fungi  feed  on   dead  or  decaying   matter,  or  on  living  organism.A  few  fungi  obtain  their  food   from  plants  or  algae.Most  of  the  time  Fungi   remain  hidden   from  view  as  they  grow   through  their   food.It  is  only  when  fungi  produce   fruiting  bodies ,such  as  mushrooms  ,that  they   become  visible.Fruiting  bodies   have  only  one  purpose -reproduction.They  make  and  release   tiny  spores  that  enable  fungi   to  reproduce.
USEFUL  FUNGI-Some  types  of  fungi  are  delicious  to  eat.Moulds   put  the  blue  into  blue  cheeses  and  rind  on   brie   and  Camembert.Another  fungi  yeast , make   bread  rise ,   and  the  alcohol   in  wine  and  beer.Some   molds     produces  bacteria -  killing   antibiotics , such  as  penicillin 
Cyclosporin  ,  isolated   originally  from  a   fungus   is  a  drug   used  to  stop   the  body  rejecting   transplanted   organs  such   as  kidneys.But  some  fungi  can  be bad   for  human.
HARMFUL  FUNGI Some  fungi  are     highly   poisonous   and  can  even   kill.Dry   rot  fungus   destroys  wood  and  timber  in  houses.Fungi  can  attack   paper,  clothes  and other  household  items.
Mildews,  smuts, and  rusts  infect  and  destroy   valuable   crops.Some  fungi  causes   diseases  such  as athlete 's foot  ,  and  ring  worm.
The  most  valuable  fungus  is   the  white  truffle .Prized  by  chefs  for  its  pungent   smell,  by  weight    it  is five  times  expensive  than   silver.
 MOST EATABLE FUNGI, - MUSHROOM Mushroom   belongs   unique  group   of  living   things  fungi.They  consist   of   hair  -like  threads  called  hyphae ,  which  spread   unseen  through  the  soil.When  the conditions   are right , hyphae   push  upwords  out  of  the  soil   with   incredible   speed  to   form  a  mushroom.Mushrooms  are  used  as  food  in many  countries  around  the  world .They   are  delicious  to  eat.But ' beware ' ,all  mushrooms  are  not  eatable  .Some  are  highly  poisonous ,the one which  grows   in  the  wild  or in  forest.
POISONOUS   MUSHROOMS-.Some   poisonous  mushroom  are -The  death  cap,less  than  28  g  can  kill  a  person in  just  few  hours.likewise   coffin  web cap, ,Destroying  angel  and  false  morel  are  all  poisonous  and  should  never  be  eaten.Even  if  one  touches  it ,should  wash   hands  thoroughly.

  • The  world's  biggest  fungus  is  a specimen  of  a  honey  fungus  known  as  the "humongous  fungus".It   grows  beneath  a  forest   in   oregon  USA   covering  an area    of  9sq   km(3.5sq miles),and  many  weigh   up  to   600  tonnes.
  • One  of  the  most   important  functions  of  mould  is  to  breakdown  dead  animals   and  plant  remains.Without  these  fungi ,  we   would  be knee-deep  in  dead  organism.Mould  break  downs  the  remains  ,leaving  it   to   rot.

  • There    are   more  than  100,000  species  of  fungi  in  three  main  groups -black  bread   molds,spore    shooters, spore  droppers.
