HEAVENLY BODIES

IF  WE   look  at    the  sky   on  a  clear  night  ,we  can  see   the  distant   stars   and   constellations   and  usually   the  moon  .Some  times  we  can   also   see   comets  or shooting  stars  ,  and  on   seeing   them  we  quickly   make  a  wish  .It  is    believed    that  a  wish .With  the  help  of  a   telescope    ,we   can   see  many  more   stars    than  we  do  with  naked  eye.Astronomers   observe  the  sky  with     a  telescope    and  keep    discovering   new  stars  and  galaxies.
Most   of  us    think   that  all  points   of   light   in  the  sky  are  stars .But   this  is  not  always  true .Some  of  the   bright  point  of  light  may  be  planets, which  are  radiate  by  the  sun, some  may  be  remote  galaxies  ,collection  of  many   stars.Unlike  the  moon   and  the  planets  ,   star  shine   by  producing  their  own  light .Some  stars   shine  strongly  and  some  weakly .The   energy   for  shining   is  generated  inside  the  core  of  the  stars. Our  sun  is  also  a star   and  is  relatively  small  in  composition  to  other stars.
CONSTELLATIONS- THE  Ancient  Greeks   found  some  patterns   when  they  observed  stars. They  found   that  eight  stars  together   looked  like a whale,  while  some  other  stars   seemed   to  resemble   a lion   or  a  bear. They  put  together   these  groups  of  stars  as  pictures,  many   of  which  we  hardly  track  these  days. The  reason  is  that  the  stars    have changed  positions  in   the   3000  years   that  followed  after  the  Greek    first  observed   the  constellations .However  ,the  following  constellations  can   be  seen   very  clearly   in  the  northern   hemisphere;PISCES,(1),ARIES(2),  TAURUS(4)  ,CASSIOPEIA (5)
Perseus(6).  Auriga(7)  ,Orion (8),   Gemini  (9), Lynx(10) ,Cancer(11)  ,,  Little  dipper(14)  ,Draco (15),Herdsmen(16) ,Hercules (17) ,  and  Ophiuchus(18)
HOW  FAR  AWAY    ARE  THE ST ARS   FROM  US.-Most  of  the  stars   are  billions  of  kilometers   away  from  us .Astronomers   specify   distances  in  space  in  in unit  caled  light  year. A  light  year  is  a  distance    covered  by  light in   one  year . The  speed  of  light  is  300,000km /s.Proxima Centauri  ,  the  star  nearest   to  sun ,  is   4.2  light years  away  from   the  Earth.

CONSTELLATIONS-

  • INTERESTING    FACTS-   There  is   a  term  called ' light   pollution'.  It   refer  to  the  artificial   lights  of  the  cities  that  illuminate    the  night  sky   and  create   difficulties   for  the   astronomers   in  studying    the  night  sky.

  • The    flag   of   Australia    features    a  constellation   on  it.This  constellation   is  called   the  'Southern  cross'we   can  see   it  only  when  we  are   in  the  southern   hemisphere .It  is  never  visible  over  Europe.
