ANCIENT GREECE describes the time from around 1500BC to about 200 years after the birth of Christ .The Greek civilization is known for its great philosophers ,scientists ,and democracy .Greek had a common language and worshiped a common God Zeus..But their king was not common king .There were many city states like Sparta and Athens which fought among themselves.
The Greek established trade centers all around the Mediterranean Sea.They were the competitors of the Phoenicians ,who settle down in North America.City states with powerful castles arose on the Greek mainland .At around 1200 BC ,warring races from the North east conquered one of the powerful city-states .But around 800BC City -states once again become powerful.
City -states were governed by noble,known as polish ,were allowed to to decide on matters relating to the state.In 594BC ,a statesman named Solon ruled that every one who was over 30 years of age could participate in the people's assembly All except women and slaves given this right.
GREEK GOD -ZEUS was the supreme god of the Greeks He lived in the mount Olympus ,a Greek castle hill.,with many Gods and goddess ;even though he was a god ,he had human qualities .The Zealously of Hera ,Zeus's sister and wife ,is well known . Zeus also had lot of girl friends .According to a legend , he fell in love with beautiful Europa ,abducted her in the form of a bull and took her to Crete.
ALEXANDER THE GREAT
Alexander was the son of king Philip of Macedonia.He like the culture of Greek ,therefore he invited the great philosopher Aristotle to the Macedonia court as a teacher of his son Alexander.Aristotle taught Alexander a lot of things,natural science,the art of warfare,literature etc.Later on Alexander showed respect to the Greeks .and never suppress them because of Aristotle 's teachings.,when he conquered them.Alexander was called 'the great' because of his qualities
He always treated the defeated with respect,he let them practice their religions freely and allowed them to be ruled by their governors.He also allowed soldiers to marry women from the conquered countries.In this way he, converted his enemies into his friends Alexander was considered the greatest king of Persia.

- The Marathon race of today is based on a legend ,according to which a Greek runner run 40 k.m to convey the message of victory. in the battle near Marathon.
- The Spartan boys were never allowed to eat full.,had to take bath in the river in winter too.and whipped once in a year so much that their blood came out.,in order to make them strong soldier.
- During Olympic games ,that were held in the honor of Zeus ,all wars between states were suspended.
- In the people's assembly ,every citizen could talk till a water clock signaled them to stop.
