PLACES-GREAT GRASSLANDS-SAVANAS AND STEPPES




                
THE  SAVANNAS  AND  THE  STEPPES    are  the   great  grasslands  of  the  Earth.Savanna   grasslands , lie  between  the  tropical   rain forests    and  the  deserts  in  the  Northern    and  the southern   hemispheres.Both   the  grass  lands are   the   biggest   stretches  of   grass   lands  .Nothing   but  only   grasses   grows  here,except  some   dwarf   trees.Trees  like  Acacia   and  the  Baobab    grow  in   the  Savanna.Baobab   tree  can  store  water  in  their  thick  spongy    stems. in  the  rainy  season  and   uses  it  in  dry  season.
WILD  LIFE - Various   animals   like Lion,  cheetahs  ,hyenas, and
large  herds  of  Zebras,Giraffes,gnus,and  antelopes  are   found  here in  the  Savanna .Beside,   birds  like  flamingos  and bald-headed  vultures   also  found  here.
STEPPES   GRASS LANDS  - are  found   in  the  middle  of  the  continents like  ,Pampas    of  south America,and  Prairies   of  North America.These  are   dry  ;devoid of  trees, and  cold  in  winter.

THE   BISON  - Today   there  are  some   400,000  bison   in  the   North  American   Steppes  ,but  they   had   almost  become extinct about  130 ,years  ago.At  that  time  some  remaining  animals  were  transferred   to the  Yellow  stone  National park.  in  North  A America to  protect  them.Bison  are  nomadic  grazers   and  are   peaceful .However    they   may  attack   often  ,without  warning  and  for  no  apparent   reason.Earlier   the  native  Americans lived  on  the  meat  of  the animal  and   used  the skin ,fur,bones, and  tendons  to  make  things  like  tents,clothes,tools,and  weapons.
FLAMINGOS .-This  large  bird     stand  on   one  leg ,to   conserve   body  heat  and  energy.The  flamingos  tucks   one  leg  into  its  body  feathers  to  warm  it .The  pink  color  on   the feathers   of   the  flamingos   comes  from  the  pink  colored  crabs  that  the  birds   eat.If  flamingo  does not  feed  on  these  crabs  ,their  plumage   slowly  becomes   white.
BALD -HEADED   VULTURES. This   scavenger   birds    cleans  the  environment  by  eating  dead  animals .They   feed  ld  on  dead  animals 's  corps  .Their  bald  head  is  due  to  the  reason  ,that  ,while  eating ,they   need   to  stick  their  heads   deep  inside  the  dead  body.Feathers  on  the  head  and  at  the  neck    would  become  dirty  or  get  caught  in  something.Dead  animals  often  pose   a  risk  of  spreading  infectious  diseases.Thus   they  are  bald headed.
HERD   ANIMALS  - Many   animal  like  Zebra,Giraffe,  wild  horses  ,bison, antelopes  lives  in  the  grass  lands.They  always  lives in  herds.  in  open  spaces  as  their  are  no  trees   or   cover  to  hide  them  from  predators,the  herd  gives  them  protection.
Some  animals  in  the herd   guards  and  keeps  a  watch  for  the predators,like  lions   ,wolves  or  cheetahs ,while  others  can  graze 
peacefully.The  predators  do  not  dare  to  attack   the whole   herd.
they  try  to  separate   a  weak  or  sick   animal   from  the  herd  and attack   it  individually.
THE   BAOBAB  TREE.- This   tree  stores  water   in  the  thick ,spongy   tissues  of   its  stem.In  the  rainy  season  it  can  store upto140,000  liters   of  water ,which  it  uses  during  the  dry     period.Elephants  damage  these  trees   for  their  water  reserve
They  destroy   the  bark  of  the  tree   with  their  tusks,pull   out  the  water -rich  tissue    from  the  stem  and   suck  it  dry.hallowed   out  trees   collapse   and   die
