THE WORLD'S LARGEST Telescope system , the very large telescope (VLT), is located at Cerro Paranal in the Atacama desert ,Chile. It is used to study visible light and to collect and analyses the infrared heat energy and ultraviolet radiation.During a one hour exposure , each telescope can photograph , objects that are four billion times fainter than can be seen with the naked eye. The VLT consist of four telescope units, each with a mirror of 8.2 m(27 ft) in diameter . These units can be used individually or in parallel, together they stimulate one large telescope with a mirror of 16 m (52ft) in diameter.Working in parallel , a process known as interferometry, the VLT allows celestial objects to be seen in much finer detail than with the Hubble space telescope .
On 23 May ,1998,one of the telescope units took its first photograph of a celestial object , an event that astronomers call ". first light ".The VLT will be used principally to search for small , Earth like planets around other stars.
TELESCOPE SITE.
THE VLT IS LOCATED AT THE Summit of the Cero Paranal , a mountain in the Atacama desert Chile at 2,632 m(8,655ft) above sea level. The site is one of the driest place on Earth, despite being situated only 12 km (7.5 mile)from the pacific coast. The mountain top site provide remarkable conditions for observation and photography. There are up to 350 cloud-free nights per year , and images are stable owing to the lack of water vapor in the atmosphere.
