IMMORTAL MUKESH - THE GREAT SINGER

Mukesh Chand Mathur (22 July 1923 – 27 August 1976), better known mononymously as Mukesh, was an Indian playback singer. Mukesh is considered to be one of the most popular and acclaimed playback singers of the Hindi film industry.

Mukesh was a Bollywood playback singer who was active from the late 1940's to the early 1970's.  He, along with Kishore Kumar and Mohammad Rafi, are considered to be the three major male playback singers of this period.  Although he was known as a playback singer, on occasion he worked in other capacities such as actor, music director, and producer.

Mukesh's interest in the arts was seen very early.  As a child he used to surreptitiously listen in on his sister when the music teacher would come to teach her.  As he grew older, he became completely mesmerised by the songs of K.L. Saigal.  He used to spend a lot of time imitating him.

Mukesh acted in a number of films, especially in his early years.  Some of his films were, "Aadab Arz" (1943), "Aah" (1953), "Mashuqa" (1953), "Anurag" (1956).

Mukesh was nicknamed as The Man with the Golden Voice and his songs are true examples of his inimitable voice.. The pain that he had in his voice could not be imitated by anyone else. One could feel the tenderness and joy with doses of hidden anguish in his voice that was presented in a raw manner. He went on to command a huge fan following and was counted as a legend among legends.
With music director Naushad, Mukesh belted out some unforgettable hits like Tu Kahe Agar, Jhoom Jhoom Jhoom ke Naacho Aaj, Hum Aaj Kahin Dil Kho Baithe, Toote Na Dil Toote Na. These four solos made him a well-known playback singer overnight.
With Raj Kapoor, Mukesh immortalized heartbreaks and despair and belted out some classic numbers and endless list of hits. The ones that deserve a mention are Awaara (1951), Shri 420 (1955), Parvarish (1958), Anari (1959), Sangam (1964), Mera Naam Joker (1970) and Kabhi Kabhi (1976). His last recording with Raj Kapoor was the song "Ek Din Bik Jaayega" from the movie Dharam Karam. The music was composed by R.D. Burman.

He wins his first Filmfare award; this is for his work in the film "Anari" (1959).
The 1970's was especially full for him.  In 1970 wins his third Filmfare award for "Be-Iman".  In 1974, he received the National Award for the Kai Baar Yun Bhi Dekha Hai from "Rajnigandha" (1974).  He goes on numerous foreign tours to places like London (1972), Africa (1972), Canada (1976), USA (1976).

1976, while he was at a concert with Lata Mangeshkar, in Detroit, USA he had a heart attack and died when he was at the age of 53. Even after his departure, his songs are still celebrated, and they are one the best treasures for music lovers.
